Blog Post# 5

As stated in the Podcast some web 2.0 technologies are blogs and youtube. I think that blogs are very useful because they allow students to share their ideas. Blogs make students more excited about writing because it's a different way of writing. Students are also able to comment on other student's blogs so that they can also get ideas from others. Blogs are a great way to communicate with students in the classroom and it will help them learn about others in their community who also have blogs. YouTube is also a great web 2.0 technology that can be used in the classroom. In the Podcast it talks about how teachers can use youtube in the classroom to show examples of things. In many of my classes many of my teachers have used youtube as a way to share information. In our textbook it talk about the different equipment needed to share information. The equipment needed for blogs and youtube would just be a regular computer with internet so that the student would be able to get online and access these technologies.

YouTube is an interesting web 2.0 technology. Many people think that youtube is only for entertainment purposes and not supposed to be used in the classrooms. I used to think that way but then I found out the youtube has a lot more than funny cat videos and cool makeup tutorials. Youtube has many video tutorials on a variety of subjects. If you are having trouble in math in particular you can go on youtube and find a video on what ever you are learning at the moment.

I would use this in the classroom when explaining a difficult topic. Students learn in different ways so it is good to expose the students to different forms of learning. For some students it might not be enough to stand there and explain to them something but if you can find a youtube video on the subject or a tutorial it would make it easier so that the students are able to understand it.

While working on the concept map I learned a lot about using Word to create a concept map. There are so many different things that it will allow you to customize. I really enjoyed this assignment because this is a great skill to have. When you create a concept map it organizes ideas in a more compact way. It is also easier to present information in a concept map. There wasn't really anything that I disliked about the concept map I thought it was a fun assignment. I can use this when working in the classroom. I think it will make things easier to understand for students.

Blog Post #4

Standard: MAFS.3.G.1.1

Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

In chapter 8 it talks about using tutorials which are self-contained lessons. I think that tutorials would be great to use in the classroom because sometime students have a hard time learning specific topics so tutorials would be good for them. As stated in chapter 8, tutorials are able to give students control of the pace of instruction. Khan academy is a website that has many tutorials for students, they try to make learning different subjects fun and easier to understand.

I believe that using the internet to support student research is very important. The internet has a lot of information and you can look it up by just typing a few word into a search engine. It is very useful because if a student is researching a specific subject they can look it up on the internet and find the information they need. The only thing students should be careful about is using unreliable resources. The internet can be full of relevant information but it can also have a lot of false information. Students just need to make sure that they are researching their topic to a great extent to make sure that the information that they find is correct.

For me, I first do a regular search go my topic and see what pops up. Then, I read through some of the websites and gather information from there. I also try to find websites that are known for being credible; New York Times, or Huffington Post are some of the ones I like using. I also look for the author, date, writing style, and sources of the website. These can give you an idea if the website is credible or not. In the podcast it does talk about seeing if the website has an author, and talks a little about the writing style like if the grammar is correct.

While working on the Web Hunt I learned about the different standards. I thought it was an interesting assignment that provided us with the opportunity to get more familiar with the different types of standards that there are. Web hunt challenges: 1.Your students are learning about the water cycle find a website that illustrates the water cycle. 2. Your students are learning about geometric figures. Find a tutorial that would help the students with this lesson.

Shoomp is a great website that has many resources that help students with anything that they need to do well in school. The website is very user friendly, so it is easy to use. When you first go on the website there are different tabs that you can click on depending on what you need. Some will lead to study tools, others to test prep, and there are some that can help you plan out you want to do in the future. Shoomp also has videos on different topics, so if you are having trouble with a subject it is easy to find the video on the subject and try and understand it.

In chapter 9 they talked about blogs. I would like to use blogs with my students because I feel like it will help them want to write more. Students will be able to post their own ideas and write about topics that are interesting to them and then have people read and comment on their post. Students will also be able to read and comment on other peoples post. There are many different websites that can be used to help students start their own blog. The digital citizenship concepts that will be addressed are student participation in the community because while using blogs people from all over are able to read what the student has written.
While working on the newsletter assignment I was able to practice using different things on Word. In class I learned a lot of new things that I could use in Word to make my assignments look better, like adding graphics, and I was able to use the things I learned in class in this assignment. I really enjoyed this assignment. Being able to write our own stories was really fun.

Blog Post # 2

As a student I have used Microsoft Word many times. I use it for things like writing papers, and typing up notes. When I was younger I used Microsoft Word to do many of my projects. I was able to add text and graphics to make them look better. In high school, I took a journalism class and I used Word to write different types of articles and to design magazine covers. My teachers use word to create tests and also to create lesson plans. In the textbook it states that teachers can also use Word Processing to assist students that cannot easily hold a pencil and also those with poor fine motor skills. This will be helpful in the classroom because not every student learns the same way so by using Word it will help them with their coordination.
Copyright laws are set in place to protect someone's original work. In my school I had some teachers who would use pictures off the internet on their PowerPoint presentations and sometimes they would play some songs in class for students. I think this would be considered fair use and not copyright because they weren't making profit off of these works and they were using it for educational purposes. In my classroom I would try to make sure that I make sure to develop my own material or only use small pieces of other people's work and give the original credit for their work. For students I would explain the difference between copyright, and fair use, so that they understand that they cannot just take everything they see from the internet and use it as theirs.
Since registering for a twitter account I have followed many different types of accounts. I think twitter is great for connecting with other people and learning about what is going on in the world. I have never had a twitter so this is a new experience for me. I am really enjoying using it because I am able to follow accounts that interest me and the one's that are about education have great ideas for things to do in the classroom. I like the fact that our whole class and students from other classes can communicate through twitter. As a teacher I think it would be good to use twitter because it will allow students to communicate not only with each other but other members of our community.

Blog # 1

I think that computers are a very important part of the educational experience children can have in the classroom. Many teachers use computers for PowerPoint presentations, which are useful for children who are visual learners. Some teachers also use Microsoft Word for creating quizzes and exams, which is beneficial for the whole class. Using computers in the classroom can also prepare students for the "real world." Computers also reinforce what has been learned in the classroom. There are many websites available for student to use if they want to learn more about a subject or if they don't really understand a certain topic. A critical concern about using technology in the classroom is time. There is so much that teachers have to accomplish in one day and it is difficult of them to find time to implement technology in their curriculum.
In my classroom I hope to use computers to reinforce certain material. I want student to use the different websites available to practice what is being learned in the classroom. I would also like the idea of blogs. I think it's a great idea which can help student become better and more comfortable at writing. In this class I hope to learn the necessary skills that I need and other ways to incorporate technology in my classroom.
A digital native is someone who has grown up knowing technology and can't really remember a time when it wasn't available. A digital immigrant is someone who started learning about technology as a teenager or adult and watched the technology develop. For digital immigrants it is a little bit harder to  understand what some technological devices do. Some of the teachers I have had are not very good with technology. They would always have to ask for help from one of the students or faculty member for things as simple as opening up a PowerPoint presentation. Other teachers knew more about technology than the students did. For the teachers that didn't understand technology, it would take them forever to set up a presentation and it would take away class time. I don't think there will be any big differences between me and my students in the future because I love all technology and I hope to keep up with all the new technology that will come out in the future.

Technology has been a very important part of my life. I got my first computer as a birthday present when I was about five years old. It did not have any internet but it had Microsoft Office installed. During my time with a Windows computer I mostly learned how to use Microsoft Word, which helped me tremendously with all my school assignments. A few years later I got a Macbook. Macbooks are a little bit different from Windows computers so it took some time getting use to their formatting but eventually I understood how it worked and now I love my Mac. I used my computer for school and for entertainment. I learned many things like how to search the internet for any information that I needed and use the programs that they had available for school and projects.

During this course I hope to learn more about PowerPoint and review the basics to make sure that I understand everything about a Windows computer. Even though I have used PowerPoint in the past I never really understood everything that was available for me to use. I remember seeing other students presentation's and they were very elaborate while mine were always plain. So I would like to be able to do more with PowerPoint and learn how to make better presentations. I would also like to learn all the basics of using a Windows computer because I have been using a Mac for so long that I have forgotten how to do many things on a Windows computer.

Today, I learned a lot about my personal learning style. By taking this quiz I learned that I learn by using a little bit of each of the learning styles. Reading through the explanation on each of the different learning style I found out that I am mostly a hands-on learner I like to try things out so that I can fully understand the concept. I also learned that I like to first see the "big picture" and then try to connect the dots to understand a certain concept. It was very interesting to see how many ways there are for people to learn.
